Camano Island Mosquito Control District, a special district affiliated with Island County, protects the health and quality of life Islanders expect. Mosquitoes are the deadliest animal on the planet, killing over 500,000 people per year due to their ability to transmit infectious disease. An explosion in nuisance mosquito populations in 1995 severely impacted Camano Island and prevented many from comfortably spending time outside. The boundaries of the district were created to take care of the worst of the infested areas at the time. The major areas of concern were at English Boom and Livingston Bay. With continued efforts each year, we have been able to keep mosquito populations in check at these sites. More sites continue to emerge as people in the district call to report mosquito problems; currently the district monitors over 300 mosquito breeding sites.
